Glazing

Sag bending is a process used to create curved or contoured glass shapes without introducing optical distortion. The glass is heated in a kiln until it softens and gradually sags under its own weight into a mould, forming the desired profile. This technique is ideal for producing smooth, precise curves for marine, architectural, and automotive applications.

Sag-bent glass can be combined with toughening or lamination for added strength and safety, ensuring compliance with relevant standards.

The traditional method for producing safety-rated glass involves thermal toughening. Trend Marine operates several facilities capable of manufacturing flat glass as well as single and bi-curvature toughened marine glass.

The glass is heated above its annealing point, approximately 720°C (1,328°F), and then rapidly cooled using forced air drafts while the inner portion remains free to flow for a short period.

Thermally tempered glass can also be laminated or incorporated into IGUs (insulated glazing units).

Samples of all toughened glass undergo impact testing to ensure compliance with ISO 614. In line with our ISO 9001 procedures, all tests are fully recorded and audited.

The process of chemical toughening produces glass without any heat-toughening marks or optical distortion. The glass is immersed in a bath containing a potassium salt (typically potassium nitrate) at temperatures exceeding 400°C. This initiates an ion exchange between the sodium ions in the glass surface and the potassium ions from the bath solution. The chemical process forms a substantial toughened ‘skin’ on the glass, making it significantly more resilient and durable.

Once chemically toughened, the glass is laminated on-site at Trend Marine to achieve safety-rated specifications.

Glass will be chemically toughened in accordance with EN 12337-1 and batch tested in accordance with EN 1288-3.
